Navajo Jewelry
and Jewelry Making
Of the Native Americans Indians, the Navajo are famous for their intricate jewelry made with silver and inlaid with gemstones, such as turquoise.
The Navajo are believed to have learned silversmithing from the Mexicans, who had learned it from the Spaniards after their arrival in the American southwest.
Native American jewelry has since then developed its own distinctive styles, fusing the use of silver metalwork, with traditional designs. The Navajo led in the use of silver, but in turn the Zuni and Hopi also gained the knowledge of silversmithing.
